Dad,
They say the greatest magicians are the ones who make the impossible seem effortless.
And while you've never quite mastered pulling a rabbit out of a hat, you've spent a lifetime performing a trick far more extraordinary.
You have this remarkable ability to make the weight of the world feel a little lighter.
It doesn't matter how complicated life gets, how uncertain things seem, or how far away you might be. Sometimes, all it takes is a phone call, a conversation, or simply knowing you're there, and suddenly, everything feels manageable again.
It's a rare kind of magic. The kind that doesn't require a stage, a spotlight, or a round of applause.
And perhaps the most extraordinary part is that I don't think you even realize you're doing it.
I've come to understand that this isn't something you've given only to me. It's something everyone fortunate enough to know you has experienced in their own way. You have spent your life being the person others can count on, the steady hand when things get complicated, the reassuring voice when answers are hard to find, and the quiet confidence that somehow, someway, everything will work itself out.
That's a pretty incredible gift to give the world.
And an even greater gift to grow up with.
The older I get, the more I recognize just how much of the person I've become is a reflection of the man you've always been. Not necessarily because of the things you've taught me, but because of the way you've made me feel, the example you've set, and the certainty of knowing that no matter what life throws my way, I've always had you in my corner.
So, for your birthday, we thought it was only fitting to arrange a little magic of our own.
On October 25th, Monica and I are stealing you and Mom away for an evening at The Magic Table in Toronto.
No responsibilities. No problems to solve. No one needing you to have all the answers.
Just the four of us, a little wonder, a few surprises, and another memory to add to a lifetime of them.
Because for someone who spends so much of his life making things better for everyone else, we couldn't think of a better way to celebrate than by making a little magic happen for you.
And while I'm sure the magicians will have a few impressive tricks up their sleeves, I suspect the greatest magician in the room will be sitting right there at our table.
Happy Birthday, Dad.
Love you, Dad.
Austin & Monica
